Ambati Rayudu's Latest Advise to Virat Kohli Stirs Controversy

IPL 2024: CSK former player Ambati Rayudu feels that the youngsters in the team that Virat Kohli plays for shouldn’t be held up to the same standards as the batting superstar. Rayudu feels that Kohli wants his teammates to be performing and delivering at his level which is difficult to match.

“When you have a stalwart or a legend like Virat Kohli, who has set really high standards for the best in the game to match,” Rayudu said on Star Sports. “So, it is very-very hard for youngsters to be in a side like Virat Kohli and really try and match his standards because he wants the team to be at that standard.

England legend Kevin Pietersen was also part of the conversation and he interrupted arguing that those level of expectations should be good for youngsters.

However, Rayudu was adamant claiming that “sometimes the burden of really trying to be Virat Kohli in a squad where you know, no body is going to be Virat Kohli.”

When the host cited the example of Kohli’s RCB teammate Rajat Patidar stepping up, Rayudu replied that a team should have players with their own identities.

“Patidar can only be a Patidar but not Virat Kohli. RCB, as a management, should understand that you can not have 11 Virat Kohlis. You need to have one Virat Kohli with 10 others being themselves with their own identities, own strengths and weaknesses, and you need to use them well in terms of resources. You cannot expect a player to win you games in the very first season, you need to give them that little leeway at times and draw them into a match-winner.”

And he even suggested that Kohli should lower his standards of expectations from youngsters and go easy on them when they commit a mistake.

Virat Kohli finished IPL 2024 with the Orange Cap, scoring 741 runs at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.70. He will now turn his attention towards representing India at the 2024 T20 World Cup that gets underway from June 1.
