Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to eight years of prison after being proven raped. A single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal passed the order to the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has suspended Sandeep Lanichhane after a final judgement from the Kathmandu DC for paring an 18-year-old woman.

In response to the court’s decision, the CAN stated “We inform you that Sandeep Lamichhane has been suspended from any kind of domestic and international cricket activities as he has been convicted and sentenced.”

The Kathmandu District Court, in addition to the 8-year prison sentence, imposed a fine of Rs 3,00,000 on the 23-year-old cricketer. Lamichhane also has to pay a compensation of INR 2,00,000 to the victim’s family said Chandra Prasad Panthi, information officer at the court.

The spinner, who was arrested after a girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August 2023, was released on bail in January by a Nepal court.

A joint bench of the Patna High Court judges Dhruvaraj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal decided to release Lamichhane on bail for INR 2 million, reversing the decision of Kathmandu District Court.

The player was also barred from leaving the country until the final verdict of the court in this case. In February, Scotland cricket players had refused to shake Lamichhane’s hands after their 3-wicket loss to Nepal.

The Scottish players shook hands with all other Nepal players, except Lamichhane as part of a silent protest to the spinner’s continued presence and participation in the ICC’s World Cup League 2 series which also includes Namibia. Lamichhane had been made aware of the protest beforehand.

Sandeep Lamichhane was the first player from Nepal to play in the IPL when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals in 2018. He holds the record for the world’s second faster bowler to capture 50 ODI wickets and the 3rd fastest to race to 50 T20I wickets.

The leg-spinner’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire stated that the cricketer wants to appeal the decision in a higher court. The suspension comes after an arrest warrant was issued in September 2023, leading to Lamichhane’s removal as the Nepal captain by the CAN.

While playing in the CPL for Jamaica Tallawahs, Lamichhane faces the consequences of the arrest warrant as the franchise released him immediately. He returned to Kathmandu, where he was subsequently arrested.

Before his arrest, Lamichhane denied the allegation, labelling them as a “conspiracy”. The suspension has now put a halt to his career, raising concerns about the impact on his future endeavours.

Sandeep Lamichhane was known for his impressive performances in white-ball cricket and has taken over 100 wickets in more than 103 matches from Nepal.
