‘Hated Batting at Number 3’ Rohit Sharma Reveals Why Gill Isn’t Opening Test Match: Even though, Shubman Gill was too weak to impress during the test match against SA at Centurion, Indian team captain and skipper Rohit Sharma has supported him to outshine No.3 in Test cricket.

So, in the 1st test match, Gill stood to bat at no.3 and was found to create a strong outing in it. Shubman scored two and 26 at the centurion test and dropped to pacemakers Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen in the 1st and 2nd innings separately. 31.06 in 19 matches is the dark average point of gills in the test format.

Rohit’s Explanation Of Shubman Gill’s Batting at No.3

“There is not much difference (on opening to batting at number 3). It takes just 1 ball for a number 3 to go in. And sometimes when an opener gets injured, a number 3 has to walk out and open the innings. I don’t see much difference there. Gill is smart and understands his batting pretty well,” the Indian skipper stated to reporters before the second test at Cape Town.

When we look at the 2023 test match scores of Gill’s ie., just 258 runs across 11 innings which has not been an outstanding performance from him.

“He prefers that number. He has batted in the Ranji Trophy at that number around that position. Gill has opened in Test and limited overs games but the number 3 was his preference. He feels he can do well for us batting at that position. It is an individual thing about how you think about certain positions,” Rohit said further.

“I hated batting at number 3 and that is my opinion. You open the batting or wait a little to go down the order to bat at number 5 or 6. Since I started opening, from 3 onwards till number 7 I don’t think it is the right position for anyone,” Rohit expressed to the reporter ahead of the final test against South Africa at Cape Town.
