ICC announces nominees for Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award

On 4 January 2024, Thursday, ICC announced the nominees for the Men’s ODI cricketer of the year award. As a delight for the Indian fans, three Indian players have secured the place.

Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, Shubman Gill and New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell are the four shortlisted players for the award. All 4 cricketers had a memorable year 2023.

Kohli, Gill and Mitchell showed their exceptional skills with the ball, while Mohammed Shami showed his magic with his bowling skills. As a result, all are deserving winners of the prestigious award.

The highlight of Shami’s impressive performance in the ODI World Cup 2023 was his magnificent record haul of 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final. Shami took 24 wickets in just 7 innings in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 and ended the tournament as the leading wicket-taker.

Shuban Gill completed the World Cup 2023 with a total of 354 runs at an average of 44.25. Nonetheless, he had a great year as he ended 2023 as the leading run-getter across all formats.

Star batter Virat Kohli had a remarkable 2023, where he peaked in ODIs and won the Player of the Tournament award at the ODI World Cup.

During the World Cup, India’s number 3 managed to score at least fifty in nine out of his 11 innings. He finished with an extraordinary 765 runs, which is now the highest individual score ever made by a batter in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, surpassing the previous record set by Sachin Tendulkar in 2003.

New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell had an outstanding year in ODIs in 2023, scoring 1204 runs, which is the third highest by a New Zealand player in a calendar year in the format.
