Jay Shah wishes good luck to India ahead of World Cup opener

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah wishes team India good luck for their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign ahead of their opening match against Ireland on Wednesday, June 5. The Indian team will take on Ireland at the Nassau Country International Cricket Stadium, New York in the second Group A fixture which will serve as the opening match for both teams.

Ahead of the game, Shah took to social media X to extend his best wishes for their campaign. Earlier, the BCCI secretary had also expressed full faith in team India to lift the T20 World Cup under the leadership of Rohit Sharma at an event in February 2024.

“Let’s bring this trophy home… Jai Hind! @BCCI,” wrote Shah on X.

Meanwhile, before their opening match, there are widespread speculations that skipper Rohit Sharma is going to open the innings along with Virat Kohli. Notably, Kohli didn’t take part in the warm-up fixture against Bangladesh. However, the team management decided to open the innings with Sanju Samson and Rohit despite having Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad.

Hence, the move is suggestive of the fact that Jaiswal might not feature in playing Xi for the opening game with either Samson or Kohli opening the innings in his place. Meanwhile, the pitch at the Nassau Country International Cricket Stadium has also come under the limelight for its slow nature.

Sow Nature of New York Pitch

During the first game at the venue between Sri Lanka and South Africa, questions were raised on the pitch as it produced a low-scoring game. After choosing to bat first, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 77. In reply, South Africa took 16.2 overs to chase down the target scoring under 5 runs per over.

It will be interesting to see how the nature of the pitch affects India’s team selection. The Rohit Sharma-led side will be playing their first 3 games at the venue with the opening game against Ireland followed by the all-important game against Pakistan on June 9 and the third game against co-hosts USA on June 12.
