प्रस्तावना:- भारतवर्ष में हिंदुओ के तैतीस करोड़ देवी-देवता हैं जिन्हें वे मानते तथा पूजते हैं परंतु उनमें से प्रमुख स्थान भगवान शिव का है। भगवान शिव को मानने वालों ने शैव नामक सम्प्रदाय चलाया। शैव सम्प्रदाय के अधिष्ठाता एवं प्रमुख देवता भगवान शिव ही माने जाते है और शिव की उपासना नियमित करते है। कहते है सभी भगवान इतनी जल्दी खुश नही होते जितनी जल्दी भगवान शिव होते है।

भगवान शिव के नाम:- शास्त्रों और पुराणों में भगवान शिव के अनेक नाम है जिसमे से 108 नाम तो मै यहाँ नही लिख सकता पर कुछ नाम जो आप सब भी जानते होंगे,भगवान शिव को शंकर,भोलेनाथ, पशुपति, त्रिनेत्र,पार्वतिनाथ आदि अनेक नामों से जाना व पुकारा जाता है।

शिवरात्रि का नाम किस प्रकार पड़ा:- शिव पुराण के अनुसार भगवान शिव सभी जीव-जन्तुओं के स्वामी एवं अधिनायक है। ये सभी जीव-जंतु, किट-पतंग भगवान शिव की इच्छा वसे ही सब प्रकार के कार्य तथा व्यापार किया करते है। शिव-पुराण के अनुसार भगवान शिव वर्ष में छ: मास कैलाश पर्वत पर रहकर तपस्या में लीन रहते है। उनके साथ ही सभी कीड़े-मकोड़े भी अपने बिलो मे बन्द हो जाते है। उसके बाद छः मास तक कैलाश पर्वत से उतर कर धरती पर श्मशान घाट में निवास किया करते है। इनके धरती पर अवतरण प्रायः फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की त्रयोदशी तिथि को हुआ करता है। अवतरण का यह महान दिन शिवभक्तों में “महाशिवरात्रि” के नाम से जाना जाता है।

शिवरात्रि का महत्व:- महाशिवरात्रि के दिन शिव मंदिरों को बड़ी अच्छी तरह से सजाया जाता है। भक्तगण सारा दिन निराहार रहकर व्रत उपवास किया जाता है। अपनी सुविधा अनुसार सायंकाल में वे फल, बेर, दूध आदि लेकर शिव मंदिरों में जाते है। वहां दूध-मिश्रीत शुद्ध जल से शिवलिंग को स्नान कराते है। तत्पश्चात शिवलिंग पर फल, पुष्प व बेर तथा दूध भेंट स्वरुप चढ़ाया करते है। ऐसा करना बड़ा ही पुण्यदायक माना जाता है। इसके साथ ही भगवान शिव के वाहन नन्दी की भी इस रात बड़ी पूजा व सेवा की जाती है। महाशिवरात्रि के दिन गंगा-स्नान का भी विशेष महत्व है क्योंकि ऐसी मान्यता है कि भगवान शिव ने गंगा के तेज प्रवाह को अपनी जटाओं में धारण करके इस मृत्युलोक के उद्धार के लिए धीरे-धीरे धरती पर छोड़ा था।

शिवरात्रि त्योहार की कथा:- पूर्वकाल में चित्रभानु नाम का एक शिकारी था। शिकार करके वो अपने परिवार को चलाता था। वो एक साहूकार का कर्जदार था, लेकिन उसका ऋण समय पर नही चुका सका, क्रोधित सहुकार ने शिकारी को एक बार पकड़कर शिवमठ मेही बन्दी बना लिया। संयोग से उस दिन शिवरात्रि थी। शिकारी बहुत ध्यान से शिव से जुड़ी सभी धार्मिक बाते सुन रहा था। चतुदर्शी को उसने शिवरात्रि व्रत कथा भी सुनी शाम होते ही साहूकार ने उसे अपने पास बुलाकर ऋण चुकाने के बारे में पूछा तब शिकारी ने अगले दिन ऋण लौटाने का वचन देकर बन्धन मुक्त हो गया।

फिर दूसरे दिन अपनी दिनचर्या की भांति वह जंगल मे शिकार करने निकला। लेकिन दिनभर बंदी ग्रह में रहने के कारण वो भूख प्यास से व्याकुल होने लगा। शिकार खोजते हुए वो बहुत दूर निकल गया। जब अंधेरा होने लगा तो उसने सोचा की रात मुझे जंगल मे ही बितानी होँगी तभी उसे तलाब के किनारे बेल का पेड़ दिखा वो उस पेड़ पर चढ़कर रात बीतने के इंतजार करने लगा बेल के पेड़ के नीचे ही शिवलिंग था। जो बेलपत्रों से ढका हुआ था। शिकारी को उसका पता भी नही चला पड़ाव बनाते समय उसने जो टहनियां तोड़ी वे संयोग से शिवलिंग पर गिरती चली गयी। इस प्रकार दिन भर भूखे-प्यासे शिकारी का व्रत भी हो गया और शिवलिंग पर बेलपत्र भी चड़ गए। एक पहर रात्रि बीत जाने पर तलाब के पास एक हिरणी आई शिकारी ने अपनी वाण उठाई और तानने लगा ही था, कि हिरणी ने कहा रुक जाओ में गर्भवती हु। तुम एक नही दो जान लोगे तुम्हे पाप लगेगा। तो शिकारी ने उसे छोड़ दिया और वाण अन्दर करते वक्त कुछ बेलपत्र शिवलिंग पर गिर गए। इस प्रकार शिकारी की पहली पहर की पूजा हो गयी।

थोड़ी देर बाद फिर एक हिरण आयी तब फिर शिकारी ने अपनी वाण तान दिया इस बार हिरणी ने कहा में अपने पति से मिलकर अभी आती हु तब तू मुझे मार देना शिकारी फिर वाण अंदर करते वक्त कुछ बेल पत्र फिर शिवलिंग पर गिर गए। शिकारी की दूसरे पहर की भी पूजा हो गयी। इस प्रका शिकारी की तीनों पहर की पूजा किसी ना किसी कारण से पूरी हो गयी। उसके इस प्रकार भूखे रखने की बजह से उसका व्रत हो गया और शिकार के बहाने उसकी पूजा हो गयी साथ ही जागरण भी हो गया। उसके इस तरह शिव जी पूजा से मोक्ष प्राप्त हुआ और जब उसकी मृतु हुई तो उसे यमलोक ले जाया जा रहा था। कि शिवगणों ने उसे शिवलोक भेज दिया। शिव जी की कृपा से अपने इस जन्म में राजा चित्रभानु अपने पिछले जन्म की याद रख पाया तथा महाशिवरात्रि को महत्व को पूजन कर उसका अगले जन्म में भी पालन कर पाए।

शिकारी की कथानुसार महादेव तो अनजाने में किये गए व्रत का भी फल दे देते है अर्थात भगवान शिव शिकारी की दयाभाव से अधिक प्रसन्न हुए थे। अपने परिवार का कष्टों को ध्यान रखते हुए भी उसने दयाभाव दिखाया और शिकार को जाने दिया उसके इस प्रकार दया दिखाने से उसे पंडित और पुजारियों से ज्यादा उत्कृष्ठ बनाती है। जो सिर्फ रात्रि जागरण,उपवास एवं दूध,दही,बेलपत्र आदि द्वारा शिव को प्रसन्न कर लेना चाहते है। पर मन मे कोई दया भाव नही रखते है। इस कथानुसार अनजाने में हुई पूजा का महत्व अत्यधिक है। इससे ज्यादा मन मे दयाभाव रखना भी महत्वपूर्ण है।
