Kathmandu Court convicted Nepal’s former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane for the rape of a minor on Friday.

Earlier in January 2023, Lamichhane was released by the court after being arrested over allegations from a 17-year-old girl, claiming the cricketer assaulted her in a hotel room in Kathmandu.

Lamichhane stands as Nepal’s most prominent cricketer and is the first-ever player from the country to feature in the IPL. He made his IPL debut with Delhi Capitals in 2018.

Lamichhane is one of the famous spinners in Asia. He also participated in BBL CPL, T10 League, Global T20 Canada and Men’s Hundred.

The 23-year-old spinner seemed to have a bright future ahead, but his career got ruined because of a rape case. Kathmandu District Attorney’s office filed a case against him, accusing that he has raped a minor on 21 August 2023.
The girl filed a case against him on September 6. Subsequently, the cricketer was arrested. Later, he was released via bail earlier this year.

A single-judge bench of Shishir Raj Dhakal passed the order of his conviction today. The bench concluded that the girl was not a minor at the time of the rape, and the court will decide the cricketer’s jail term at the next hearing.

The Nepal Pro Club Championship tournament is going on, with Sandeep Lamichhane as the skipper of the PARSA team. PARSA team secured a place in the final of the tournament after winning the semifinal against NAC.
