Rohit Sharma becomes first batter to hit 600 sixes in international cricket

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was on fire on Wednesday (June 5) during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 match against Ireland, which was played at the Nassau Country International Cricket Stadium in New York.

The 37-year-old batter opened the innings for India and scored 52 runs from 37 balls. He hit 4 fours and 3 sixes against Paul Stirling’s men and played a big part in the eight-wicket win.

During his 52-run knock in the tournament’s opener for India, Rohit achieved many batting milestones. He became the first batter to score 600 sixes in international cricket and also became India’s most successful captain in T20Is.

India’s win against Ireland was his 42nd win in 55 T20I matches played as captain so far, which is one more than MS Dhoni’s tally of 41 wins in 72 T20Is.

In the recent match between India and Ireland in New York, Rohit also created a new record by becoming the fastest batter in the world to score 4000 runs in T20Is. Rohit completed 4000 T20I runs in just 2860 balls for India, whereas Virat Kohli needed 2900 balls to cross the 4000 run mark in November 2022.

Apart from the India star duo, Pakistan’s Babar Azam has scored more than 4000 runs in T20Is, and the Pakistan skipper needed 3081 balls to cross the 4000-run mark in T20Is.

Faster Players to Score 4000 Runs in T20Is

India’s Rohit Sharma scored 4000 runs in just 2860 balls. Virat Kohli needed 2900 balls to complete 4000 runs. While Pakistan Babar Azam requires 3081 balls to reach the 4000 runs milestone in T20Is.

The most capped player in T20Is and T20 World Cup history, Rohit Sharma has scored 4026 runs in T20Is, and he is now only behind star batter Virat Kohli, who got out for 1 run from 5 balls against Ireland on Wednesday, has 4038 runs in 118 T20Is played so far. Babar is third on the list, with 4023 runs in 119 matches.

The fifty in New York also helped Rohit become the third batter after former Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Kohli to score 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup. The Mumbai-based Indian batter has 1015 runs to his name in 40 matches at the shortest format mega event, whereas Kohli has 1142 runs. Jayawardene finished his career with 1016 runs in 31 T20 World Cup matches for Sri Lanka.
