Solve 100 or High CPU Usage in Windows 11

The trillion-dollar mammoth Microsoft has made their brand-new operating system Windows 11 available for downloads. The predecessor Windows 10 was released six years earlier, and the operating system users find it exponentially better with several groundbreaking improvements in all varied aspects. The new features provide consistent performances, a better new design that increases user productivity and creativity.

The overall design has a new look and feels to it, with round corners to icons, going for a simpler and cleaner aesthetic. This upgrade delivers impressive performances, but some users still are not convinced to say the same. There are chances of many issues arising, maybe because of high CPU usage, or some external programs which might be causing the system to crash or become unresponsive. In this article of ours, we will discuss ways on how to solve 100 or high CPU usage in Windows 11.

Ways to Fix High CPU Usage on your Windows 11 PC

Even though Windows 11 is extremely seamless and fast, high CPU usages are still common because of cases like pending updates, presence of some external malware and viruses, faulty installation of applications, antivirus blockers performing basic actions. To fix this high CPU utilization, you first have to identify the reason causing it.

This might also cause the computer to heat up, which is why customers are contemplating upgrading to the new operating system. When your system heats up above the advisable limits, there’s a possibility that it might damage some hardware components present inside the computer, like the RAM, motherboard, or storage memory. Therefore, it is essential to keep a check on the CPU processing by system services and applications.

Even though the possibility of finding the culprit is extensively vast, it is recommended to conduct some ideal checks. To save some of your precious time, follow some of these common procedures on the new Windows 11. We recommend you to try these simple and quick fixes If the CPU usage on your Windows 11 PC is high or reaches the 100% mark, try out these quick and simple fixes.

1) Try Rebooting your Computer

The initial response times when your device starts to act weird or seems to have some basic troubles, a simple restart should be ideal. Most of the time, the system is able to solve bugs, but some of them seem troublesome at times.

It is advisable to reboot your Windows 11 run computer. When your device restarts after rebooting, check your computer’s current CPU Usage, and it should come down to lower levels as compared to before.

Now that your computer is finally working normally, you can check what possibly went wrong. This is necessary because your computer might increase memory usage when you keep too many applications open or perform heavy operations.

2) Check Chrome

Google Chrome is one of the best website browsers available in the market. It stands out when compared to others, and dominates as well. It is simple, fast, and has the best performance delivery.

But on the downside, Chrome also stands out when you check its CPU consumption levels. The more tabs you open the web browser, the more CPU usage it will require to run.

Advice – If there are any google chrome updates available, it is advised to download it to be updated and lag-free. You can check it by clicking on the triple vertical dots placed on the right top side corner. If you think Chrome is using a lot more of your memory than usual, try switching on to different web browsers like Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, or Brave.

3) Disable System Apps or Services

Your computer Task Manager will report a specific way to diagnose applications or services which might be taking up more CPU resources than usual. You can find the troublesome app or service by simply monitoring the CPU usage inside the task manager.

If the issue happens to occur due to some external application or even an in-built system application, we recommend terminating the running of the app by right-clicking on it and pressing ‘End Task’. Stopping them is advised only when you are completely sure of it being the culprit as there’s a possibility of something going unnecessarily wrong.

If your computer’s performance still doesn’t improve after disabling the core applications and systems, make sure to reboot the computer. Some services which could be troublesome are –

  • SysMain: a Windows Certified Process (Superfetch) – It starts the programs which are used commonly on your computer.
  • Windows Search – This is an interface used for interconnecting your words typed-in and system settings or applications.
  • Windows Update – It downloads the pending updates for installation on the system.

Even Though there are only three services included, we recommend looking out for other services which might be helpful. The three services mentioned above are helpful for increasing CPU usage as of their work scope nature.

4) Scan for Presence of Viruses and Malware

The CPU Usage can be extremely high if the device is attacked with viruses and malware in the new Windows 11. We recommend using Windows Defender and initiating a complete scan of files or folders present on the computer’s drive. By doing so, you might be able to identify and successfully eliminate the present malware running on your PC.

If Windows Security is not able to find any malware on your computer, it will report you about the same before you take any action upon them. Check whether the high CPU usage problem is still affecting or is addressed by your Windows 11 running device.

5) Disabling the Third-Party Antivirus

External Antivirus programs are known for increasing the overall CPU Usage on your Windows run computers. If you happen to use any external antivirus applications or software, try disabling them for some time by heading over to their settings page.

After you are done disabling the antivirus services, check if the CPU Usage is affected, and hopefully has fallen down to normal. If disabling helps solve the CPU Usage issue substantially, consider replacing the program or uninstalling it completely.

We recommend not rushing into the uninstalling process, rather keep it in the disabled state for a few hours and then keep checking the computer’s CPU utilization. As mentioned earlier, Google’s Chrome uses more CPU memory than required, hence try opening tabs on different browsers and check the CPU Usage.

6) Stop Applications Running in the Background

If you’ve been running a lot of applications simultaneously on your Windows 11 computer, this is bound to result in higher CPU Usage. For applying a fix to this cause, we suggest reading the given below example carefully –

Multitasking and starting-stopping the applications have major differences in CPU Usage. When we consider keeping all the applications open when you don’t want to restart them every now and then, it is recommended to disable applications running in the background for faster and less heat-generating processing.

Nonetheless, you simply cannot perform multitasking in one go because every time you try switching from one application to another, the CPU Usage would surge. This would ultimately lead to a worsening of CPU efficiency.

Note: When you’re using Windows 10, you can disable the background apps all at once, but the same isn’t possible on the new windows 11. This new update demands you stop all the background applications separately.

This is how you perform this task

  • Click on the start button and select the ‘Apps & Features option.
  • When the relevant pages page pops up, select the apps which you want to stop from running in the background.
  • Click the three dots as shown in the picture and select the ‘Advanced Options’.
  • On the next page, you have to select the ‘Never’ option using the drop-down menu, when you scroll down to the ‘Background apps permissions’.

Continue repeating this process for all the applications with which you happen to find issues. And by doing so, these restricted applications would not run in the background.

Note: Certain applications need not come under the ‘Advanced options. This implies that thE applications either cannot be restricted from running in the background or don’t run in the background anyway, rather don’t require running in the background.

7) Installation of Pending Windows 11 Updates

If you happen to find some updates pending on your new Windows 11, then this might be troublesome. This might lead the computer software to become unresponsive and unstable, as it results in high CPU Usage.

Microsoft releases security updates on the second monthly Tuesday, so make sure to download and install it on your computer for smooth and secure functioning of your device –

Steps to search and apply the pending updates on your Windows 11 PC –

  • Press keys (Win + I) to open the Setting Menu.
  • Select the ‘Windows Update’ option and then click on ‘Check for Updates.
  • The computer will connect you to the Microsoft servers and search for any pending updates.
  • If at all the servers are able to find any update, the system will request you to download and apply it.

Now you have successfully updated your computer. You can check whether the CPU Usage has lowered down and is under control or still reaches high percentages. If the case happens to be the later one, we recommend you try out the last workaround.

8) Check your Windows 11 System’s Power Supply

This might be a solution completely off track, as this qualifies for the physical damage section. It is completely possible that the high CPU usage is due to the faulty power supply to the computer.

When the device is supplied with lesser power or voltage than recommended supply levels, it has negative impacts. The overall system functionality lowers and the system becomes unstable.

We recommend you to consult a computer technician to help or guide you better regarding the same and sort out the issue.

How to find out Applications and Services that cause High CPU Usage?

To find the high CPU utilization through the Task Manager, follow the given steps –

  • Press keys (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) to open up the Task Manager.
  • Select the CPU column once you’re inside the Task Manager.
  • By doing this, you will be shown the applications as per their consumption of CPU Usage.
  • You will find a combination of applications and services under the processes tab.
  • If you happen to find the CPU Levels to be normal, check for any sort of abnormality under the ‘Services Tab’.

Note: You cannot decide if an application or service is faulty or not, as there isn’t any fixed parameter. It is completely normal for heavy applications like high-end games which take up 80-85% of CPU memory, but not for normal applications.

Along with this, if you happen to see an unusual spike in an application’s usage, it doesn’t necessarily imply the app is at fault, but you can be suspicious about it.

How to Disable a Service on Windows 11?

Before we go ahead, it is recommended to be sure about the services that you would forcefully stop on the new Windows 11. To learn how to perform the following task, follow these steps –

  • Press keys (WinKey + R) to open ‘Run’.
  • Type out the given text in the empty field and click on ‘OK’. “services.msc”
  • Go down and find the services which you were looking for.
  • Click on the particular service and select the ‘Properties’ option.
  • Use the drop-down menu which is placed next to ‘Startup type’ and, select the ‘Disabled’ option and press ‘Stop’.
  • Apply and click on ‘OK’ to confirm to save the so far made changes.

We would have to restart the computer to look for accurate CPU usage inside the task manager. It is expected that the application usage levels should have dropped lower to normal levels, but if it remains on the high, restart the application or service which you’ve forcefully stopped previously.

We hope you were able to fix the unusually high CPU Usage of your Windows 11 PC. Please let us know in the comments any queries or suggestions you might have!
