Virat Kohli becomes first ever cricketer to achieve this unique record in 146 years of cricket history

On Thursday, Indian star batter Virat Kohli added another world record to his name as he became the first player to cross 2000 international runs in 7 different calendar years. Kohli got this special achievement in India’s second innings of the Centurion Test against South Africa.

Virat Kohli broke the record of Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara who had scored more than 2000 international runs in 6 different calendar years.

The star Indian batter is currently waging a lone battle against Proteas after South Africa took a 163-run first-innings lead. India have lost 8 wickets on the third day of the first Test at SuperSport Park.

Team India faced a challenging test against South Africa in Centurion. Unfortunately, the hosts secured victory by an innings and 32 runs. The spotlight, however shifted to Kohli, who showed his batting skills in the second innings with a 76 runs from 82 balls.

Virat Kohli achieves a unique record in 146 years of cricket history. He previously accomplished this feat in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Now with his performance in 2023, he has set a record.
Virat Kohli scoring 2000+ international runs in a year:

  • Year 2012 – 2186 runs
  • Year 2014 – 2286 runs
  • Year 2016 – 2595 runs
  • Year 2017 – 2818 runs
  • Year 2018 – 2735 runs
  • Year 2019 – 2455 runs
  • Year 2023 – 2048 runs

Reflecting to India’s performance in the first Test, it was difficult for the Indian team. The batting line-up forced a formidable South African bowling attack, with Kagiso Rabada, Macro Jansen, and Nandre Burger playing crucial roles. Despite Rahul’s efforts in scoring a century in the first innings, India reached 245. In response, South Africa went on to score 408 in the first innings.

In the second innings, India comeback with Virat Kohli slammed 76 runs. However, the rest of the batting-order struggled against the relentless South African attack, and India were bundled out for 131 and lost the game by an innings and 32 runs in 3 days.
