BCCI to Introduce Smart Replay System in IPL 2024 to Get Quicker and Accurate DRS Decisions

Before the upcoming 17th season of the IPL, a few media reports have emerged saying a new technology will be introduced to assist umpires i.e.’ System Replay System’ for faster and more accurate reviews during the matches.

Earlier the England Cricket Board (ECB) had tested a similar referral system in the 100th tournament. The main idea of this new technology is to increase the speed and accuracy of the decision-making process, as there will be more split screens and better frame rates at the upcoming showpiece event.

The biggest change from the previous IPL’s technology is that the TV director will no longer be involved in the conversation between the third umpire and the Hawk-eye operator.

According to reports, the Smart Replay System will see the TV umpires receiving direct input from the Hawk-Eye operators, who will be sitting in the same room to help umpires with the images captured by 8 Hawk-eye hi-speed cameras all around the stadium during the IPL 2024.

The report further confirmed that the Smart Replay System will also allow TV umpires to have more visuals to arrive at a particular decision, which also includes split-screen images.

BCCI conducted 2 day workshop on the Smart Replay System Before IPL 2024

As per ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI also conducted two two-day workshops on the Smart Replay System with 15 umpires. Both Indian and overseas umpires were included in that workshop and they are likely to operate the new technology during the entire IPL 2024.
