Is Rohit Sharma playing for CSK in IPL 2025? Ambati Rayudu has a wish for former MI captain

Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu said that he would like to see Rohit Sharma play for Chennai Super Kings soon, backing a potentially ground-breaking move in the history of IPL.

Rayudu backed Rohit to continue playing in the IPL for 5 to 6 years without breaking a sweat. Rohit Sharma will not be captaining the Mumbai Indians franchise in the upcoming IPL season, starting March 22 as the 5-time champions appointed Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the franchise.

Hardik was traded to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans to the title in 2022 and was given the captain armband by the franchise explaining that they needed to prepare for the transition period and that Rohit would continue to play a key role for the team in the upcoming season.

The decision to replace captain Rohit Sharma helped raise quite a few eyebrows as the India captain has been widely credited for Mumbai Indian’s success in the IPL. After taking over captaincy from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the 2013 season.

Rohit led MI to their maiden title victory in that season. There was no looking back since, as Rohit emerged as the most successful captain in the IPL, winning as many as 5 titles as captain with the Mumbai Indians.

All eyes will be on how Rohit Sharma will adapt to playing under Hardik Pandya, who will be under a bit of pressure to repeat what he did as captain of Gujarat Titans.

“I want to see him play for CSK shortly. He has played so long for Mumbai Indians. It would be nice if he could play for CSK and win there as well. That’s (captaincy at CSK) upon him. Rohit has earned the right to take that call. It’s his call on whether or not he wants to lead or not,” Rayudu told News24 while adding that Mumbai Indians would have kept Rohit in the loop before taking the call to replace him as captain.

It will be interesting to see how MS Dhoni goes about his IPL 2025 season and whether it would be the legendary captain’s last year as the player in the tournament.

Dhoni has been working hard on gearing up to lead CSK in the new season after having recovered from a long-standing knee injury. He underwent surgery to treat the issue last year and underwent rehabilitation.

MS Dhoni, who has begun training with CSK in the pre-season camp, might hang up his boots at the end of the upcoming season, having confirmed after winning the trophy last year that he would work hard to return to play for CSK as a return gift for his fans.
