Shreyas Iyer Back Injury Flares Up Again, KKR Captain Likely to Miss Initial Matches in IPL 2024

Shreyas Iyer didn’t attend Day 4 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy final between Mumbai and Vidarbha and reportedly underwent a few scans after again suffering from back spasms which has put his IPL participation in doubt.

Iyer had also complained of back spasms during the second Test between India and England in Vizag and didn’t make the cut in the squad for the remaining 3 games of the series.

However, there was no official announcement behind his exclusion from KKR and he also skipped the Ranji Trophy quarter-final between Mumbai and Baroda.

Shreyas Iyer though returned for Mumbai’s semi-final against Tamil Nadu and then the title match against Vidarbha, scored 95 off 111 in the second innings of Day 3. During his knock though, he was twice treated for back spams by the team physio.

As per the report, Iyer has aggravated his back injury for which he underwent surgery last year and he may end up missing the first few matches of the KKR in the upcoming IPL season.

“It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury which has been aggravated. It’s unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source was quoted as saying by TOI.

“During the recently-held Test series against England at home, he had told the Indian team management about this injury troubling him again,” the source added.

Shreyas Iyer, captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL, missed the entire season last year as he underwent back surgery. After spending months on the sideline, he made his competitive return with the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka before playing an intrinsic role in India’s unbeaten run in the ODI World Cup final.

Last month, Iyer, along with Ishan Kishan missed out on the annual BCCI contract with the board saying the duo wasn’t considered “in this round of recommendations.”
