BCCI has taken the right decision on Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer says Sourav Ganguly

BCCI has taken the right decision on Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer says Sourav Ganguly: A former Indian cricket captain, Sourav Ganguly expressed astonishment at the absence of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from domestic cricket after being dropped from the national team.

Both players were banned from BCCI’s central contracts on Wednesday, amid ongoing problems about their non-participation in the Ranji Trophy tournament.

“I am surprised by his decision”: Sourav Ganguly on Ishan Kishan not playing first-class cricket

While communicating with Revsports, Sourav Ganguly said BCCI’s judgment on Ishan and Shreyas was right, urging that acquired players be foreseen to perform the best. Iyer was part of the Grade B agreement while Kishan was in the Grade C list in the previous season.

“BCCI wants them to play first-class cricket. I am surprised that Shreyas and Ishan haven’t played Ranji Trophy, a premier tournament. It’s a decision by the BCCI and they were right. But, players must play first-class cricket,” stated Ganguly.

“That’s wrong. You are supposed to play first-class cricket. Once you are a contracted player, you are expected to play. Shreyas Iyer is set to play for Bombay in the semi-final in a couple of days,” Sourav added.

He went on to say that Kishan surprised him and must play in domestic competitions. Kishan left the Indian team mid-tour in South Africa and did not play in the series against England either.

“They are young people. Ishan Kishan has surprised me. They are part of the Indian team in all formats and have such a big contract in the IPL. So I don’t know why he has done that,” Ganguly expressed.

“You must play, especially when you are as gifted as Ishan Kishan. When you are playing for India in all formats, you must play. Yeah, BCCI has taken a strong stance, and rightfully so. When you are contracted, you must abide by the rules,” Ganguly added.

During his playing days, Sourav Ganguly had once said in an interview that the Ranji Trophy was thought the main tournament for household cricket in India.

Despite his outstanding career depicting India in 113 Test matches and 311 ODIs, Ganguly also had an impressive record in first-class cricket, having played 254 matches and scoring 15,687 runs. He became one of the best cricketers of all time by contributing his 100% in both domestic and international level games.

“It was the main tournament. It was based on the Ranji Trophy that national team selections happened. IPL was not there. IPL came at a later stage of my career, many of our careers. I think Ranji was the most important tournament,” said Sourav.
