Kieron Pollard and Tim David fined for breaching IPL's code of conduct

Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2024: MI’s batters Tim David and coach Kieron Pollard have been fined for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during their match against Punjab Kings on Thursday, April 18.

This has come after a viral video from the match surfaced on social media and created a controversy as it showed the MI dugout providing illegal assistance to Suryakumar Yadav over a DRS decision.

The incident took place in the 15th over of MI’s batting at the Mullanpur Cricket Stadium Ashdeep Singh bowled a delivery way outside off-stump with the umpire giving it a legal one.

Suryakumar Yadav, who was batting at 67 in 47 balls, tried to chase it but missed before the camera shifted to MI’s dugout where unusual scenes were witnessed.

While MI head coach Mark Boucher was seen gesturing to Suryakumar that the ball was a wide delivery, David and Pollard went on to ask the batter to go for the DRS call by making the gesture.

As a result, Suryakumar went for the review and much of it was allowed before the third umpire decided to overturn the decision and gave it a wide. Arshdeep had to bowl an extra delivery to finish off the 15th over which went for a boundary.

David and Pollard were each fined 20% of their respective match fees. Both admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction.

Notably, the duo committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. BCCI did not give out details of the nature of their offence but it was clear that the punishment came just for the DRS controversy.

According to Article 2.15 (b) of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, a player playing on the field is forbidden to “seek assistance from any person off the field of play to decide whether to request a referral to the TV umpire”.

While speaking about the match, the Mumbai Indians won the thrilling contest by just 9 runs, clinching their third win of the season.
