As we mentioned early in the article, Snapchat uses an array of emojis to explicitly state the relationship between you and your friend on screen. Snapchat keeps track of the amount of exchange of snaps between two users. How much two people message each other, how frequently they so, are all taken into consideration.
These emojis are like small tokens or trophies for completing snap streak milestones with your friend. In the picture below, you can the red heart we talking about in the right-hand side corner with two other emojis.
The red heart in question represents your #1 Best Friends for consecutive 2 weeks status with your friend on Snapchat. This is based on the frequency of your snap streak and chat history. If a red heart appears beside your friend’s username, it means that you have sent them snaps the most, and they too, in turn, have sent you snaps the most in the past 2 weeks.
Snapchat rewards users with creative emojis who have hit a few milestones. These emojis are divided into different categories and are used as a rewarding system for reaching different milestones with your friends. This is done to make your Snap journey much more exciting. This rewarding system keeps users engaged, by trying to accomplish these set goals and get these small tokens/trophies.
Like all the other emojis that Snapchat presents you with, the red heart emoji also serves a purpose. It comes after the yellow heart as a replacement. Red heart emoji means that you two have been best friends with each other for two consecutive weeks (after getting a yellow heart first) on the app based on your frequency of snap and chatting history.
However, this is not a permanent addition to your Usernames, it only stays there as long as you maintain the same conversation frequency and pattern with them. After you maintain it for a specific period of time, it gets replaced with another emoji indicating your friendship for that period of time on the app.
After you have attained the yellow heart, it takes 2 consecutive weeks of the same intensity of exchange of snaps and chatting to get it replaced with a red heart. In fact, some people make it a mission to get these emojis. This keeps them determined enough to continue to maintain this intensity of engagement.
The red heart emoji on Snapchat is awarded to you and your friend when you two accomplish staying #1 best friends with each other for two weeks or more on the app. You do so by maintaining a snap streak and communicating with each other more than the others.
However, if it changes to a yellow heart, it simply means that you two haven’t been keeping up the #1 best friends streak lately.
It is nothing serious to feel worried about unless it means a lot to you. Just keep exchanging snaps and you will get the red heart back in probably two weeks’ time.
If you keep up the exchange even after attaining the red heart, you may even updated to two small pink hearts. This happens when you two are each other’s best friends for 2 consecutive months or more. It shows that you two are quite serious and putting in a lot of work maintaining the back and forth.
You can see how the two pink hearts emoji look in the image attached above. If you see this next to your friend’s Username in your friend’s list, kudos to you!
You can easily check the list of emojis rewarded to you and your friends in the settings if you want to. To do so, go to Snap Menu > Settings > Additional services > Manage > Friends Emojis. Here you can check all emojis rewarded to you along with contact and timeline details. If you have blocked the user, you will still be able to see the emojis but they won’t be visible on chats.
The red heart emoji is nothing but a small token of achievement accomplished by the frequent exchange of snaps and communication on the app with your best friend for two consecutive weeks after you have achieved the yellow heart emoji. The next token is usually the two pink hearts emoji. This happens when you keep up the back and forth for two consecutive months.
