Angelo Mathews Shared Evidence After Fourth Umpire Terms His ‘Timed-out’ Dismissal Legal

Angelo Mathews Shared Evidence After Fourth Umpire Terms His ‘Timed-out’ Dismissal Legal In ODI WC 2023: The ODI World Cup 2023 observed a sensational and unusual moment when Angelo Mathews, veteran Sri Lankan batter, was denied by the ‘timed-out’ rule in the middle of the match against Bangladesh.

This moment became a hot topic and into strong debate and controversy. In response to this controversial moment, Mathew shared the ‘evidence’ after the innings of SL vs BAN to dispute the genuineness of his dismissal.

Angelo Mathews Discharged By Timed-out Rule

In the recent conflict between Bangladeshi and Sri Lanka ODI World Cup, Mathews got himself targeted in this major controversy. He passed the time limit of allotted two minutes for fixing the damaged helmet before performing his first ball.

Bangladesh’s captain, Shakib Al Hasan, urged for a “timed out,” stating that Angelo had taken time to get ready. Following a debate, the on-field umpires confirmed the request of Shakib and as a result, Mathew became the first batter to be ‘timed out’ in international cricket history.

Fourth Umpire’s Clarification

This controversal dismissal induced a fuss of responses on social media, with fans and cricket critics doubting the honesty of the bangladeshi team. To deal with that confused and unclear moment, Adrian Hodstock, who was the fourth umpire for the fixture, provided a explanation during the mid-innings break.

“When it comes to timed out, the incoming batter has to be in position to receive the ball within two minutes. The TV umpire monitors the two minutes and will then relay the message to the standing umpire. In this instance, the batter wasn’t ready within those two minutes even before the strap became an issue for him. The two minutes had already elapsed,” Hodstock clarified during conversation with Ian Bishop.

Angelo Mathews Posted ‘Evidence’ on Social Media

As a reply to the fourth umpire’s statement, Mathews shared a proof on social media and cleared that he was on time to face the first ball and wrongly given a timed out discharge. Angelo Mathews urged that he had 5 more seconds left to complete the time limit, even with his probelmatic helmet.

“4th umpire is wrong here! Video evidence shows I still had 5 more seconds even after the helmet gave away! Can the 4th umpire rectify this please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn’t face the bowler without a helmet,” Mathews response to ICC by writing on ‘X’ post (formerly Twitter).

On the other hand, Mathews desired to prove his point by presenting a visual representation of the time elapsed from the discharge of Sadeera Samarwickrama to the incident of the helmet failure.

Mathews tweeted: “Proof! From the time catch was taken and the time helmet strap coming off.”
