ICC Rankings update India's Jasprit Bumrah becomes first-ever bowler to top all three formats

ICC Rankings Update: India’s pacer Jasprit Bumrah has become the world’s best bowler in Test cricket. Bumarh claimed 9 wickets in the recently finished Vizag Test against England and has moved three places forward to the top position in the latest rankings.

He has eclipsed the spinner Ravichandran Ashwin from the top position, who now secured the third position while Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada maintains the second position. Bumrah is also the first-ever pacer from India to take the top spot in Test bowling rankings.

This is the first time that Jasprit Bumrah has become the number 1 place in the world in Test matches. He had finished with an impressive 9/91 during his team’s series-equalling effort. India had beaten England by 106 runs to level 1-1 series in five-Test series.

Bumrah’s wicket of Ollie Pope in the first innings had gone viral. He had uprooted two sticks out of three in what was a sight to watch. Pope had no answer to his perfect yorker.

The dismissal video had gone viral as Bumrah is being hailed also in England for his superb display of fast bowling skills. Not to forget, Bumarh played a huge role in taking India to victory in the second innings with 3 wickets while Ashwin also claimed 3 wickets. In the process, the India pacer also went past the landmark of 150 Test wickets.

Despite never reaching higher than 3rd place before, his impressive performances in 2024, including two five-wicket hauls, propelled him to the number 1 place. Bumrah’s rise is particularly noteworthy as he joins a select group of Indians to top the bowling charts, with spinners like Ashwin, Jadeja and Bedi.

This precious achievement is not just for Bumrah, but also for Indian cricket, marking a significant moment for the nation’s fast-bowling attack. Additionally, young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal’s double century also helped him jump in the rankings, showcasing the overall strength of the Indian team.

Jaiswal’s 209 in the first innings of the Vishakapatnam Test had helped India set up a base for the win against England. He has jumped 37 places to the 29th spot in the latest rankings for Test batters. Kane Williamson, who recently hit his 31st ton, is sitting at the top of the batting charts.

“Australia’s Steve Smith reclaimed second place on the batter rankings as England’s Joe Root dropped to third, while compatriot Zak Crawley improved eight spots to 22nd following two innings in the 70s against India,” read the ICC release.
