“Sack them all”: Outcry in Sri Lanka after World Cup Humiliation
Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign has triggered an outpouring of anger following their crushing 302-run defeat against India. This embarrassing loss, where Sri Lanka was dismissed for 55 runs while chasing a target of 358 in Mumbai, marked the fourth-lowest total in World Cup history.
Sri Lanka’s sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe sacked the national cricket board on Monday, days after a humiliating defeat by India at the ongoing World Cup 2023.

Fernando, who has been at odds with the cricket board for a long time and had previously accused it of being “traitorous and corrupt”, escalated the situation by demanding officials resign. He stated on Friday night regarding this. He said “Sri Lanka Cricket officials have no moral or ethical right to stay in office. They should voluntarily resign.”
The sports minister expressed his thoughts to the local media. Mass daily Lankadeepa, on Saturday called for explanations from the coaching staff on the heart-wrenching defeat.
Some newspapers wrote “SACK THEM ALL”, regarding a demand for change in leadership within the cricket board in Sri Lanka. Till now, Sri Lanka Cricket has not issued any formal notice on these demands, but board officials are expecting an explanation from coaches and other staff regarding the loss.
Sri Lanka has won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1996. Minister Fernando has pointed fingers at the cricket board for the “deterioration” since that time. Another cabinet minister Prasanna Ranatunga, previously stated in parliament that Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup win inadvertently led to a culture of corruption that spanned decades.
“The World Cup victory was the biggest curse for our cricket team”, said Ranatunga. He added, “Money started flowing to the cricket board after 1996, and with that came those who wanted to steal.”
