“Proud to be an Indian”: Mohammed Shami Hails ‘Courageous’ Soldiers in Patriotic Post

Pacer Mohammed Shami has been out of competitive cricket since the ODI World Cup 2023. Shami was on fire in the ICC Men’s World Cup and played a significant role in India’s journey to the final by taking 24 wickets.

However, he was suffering from an ankle injury and was ruled out of the following Test series against South Africa, Afghanistan, and England.

Meanwhile, Shami took X and posted a warm note for Indian soldiers. Shami shared a picture of him with the Armymen and wrote, “Am proud to be Indian. Salute our soldiers for their Honour, courage, and commitment.”

Shami has not been a regular member of the T20I side but he showed that he can be equally effective in the shortest format of the game. During the IPL 2023, Shami concluded the season with 28 wickets and bagged the Purple Cap.

Shami’s performance in the ODI World Cup has got him back in the reckoning for the T20 World Cup. He spoke about the chances of him playing in the T20 World Cup and expressed his desire to represent the team. Shami, however, admitted that he needs to perform well in the upcoming IPL to make a case for selection.

“There’s still a lot of time. There’s an IPL before that. Whoever is playing well should be picked for the T20 World Cup. It’s important to select the team basis the combination. If I’m performing well, I should be selected. Who will say no to the World Cup?” Shami told.

Gujarat Titans will be without Hardik Pandya in IPL 2024 as the former captain was traded to MI ahead of the main auction. However, Shami feels that his absence won’t make much of a difference.

“Kisike jane se kisiko farak nahi padta (See, it doesn’t matter who is leaving). You have to see the team’s balance. Hardik was there, he captained us well. He took us to the final in both editions and we won once. But Gujarat hadn’t signed Hardik for a lifetime. He decides to stay or leave. Shubman is made captain now, he will also gain experience. Some day, he might also leave. And it’s a part of the game. Players come and go,” Shami said.

“When you become captain, it’s important to handle the responsibility while taking care of your performance. And that responsibility has been assigned to Shubman this time. He might have some load in his mind, but the players are more or less the same. So he doesn’t need to worry. You need to manage players well and extract the best out of your players,” he added.
