Jofra Archer Set to Miss IPL 2024 as ECB Instructs to Manage Workload Before T20 World Cup

Why Jofra Archer has not registered for IPL

The auction for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to take place on December 19 in Dubai. A total of 1,166 players registered to come under the hammer at the event. All the best cricket players around the globe have registered themselves for the IPL auction, but one name was missed, it was England pacer Jofra Archer.

Jofra Archer has decided to miss the IPL 2024 as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) instructed them to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup as per the reports. He was bought by Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2022 IPL for INR 8 crores and was released by the franchise last week.
Archer has been plagued by multiple injuries and suffered a recurrence of his elbow stress fracture while playing for

Mumbai franchise during the IPL in May. This Barbadoes-born cricketer has not player any professional cricket since then and also missed the ODI World Cup 2023.

“… the ECB believes that it will be easier to manage Archer’s comeback if he is in the UK in April and May under its supervision than if he is in India on the books of an IPL team looking to get their money’s worth from him,” ‘ESPNCricinfo’ reported.

According to the report, Archer has signed a new two-year contract with the ECB ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States from June 2024. The board has opted to take as much control over Archer as possible. He had come to India for World Cup but returned to the UK after less than a week because of elbow pain.

ECB is hopeful that the pace spearhead will be a part of England’s squad for the T20 World Cup, “We take that bet with him that we want him back fit and able to play for England, because of the upside,” Robert Key had said.

“You start looking at things like the Ashes in two years, the T20 World Cup… Jofra adds so much to that,” he had said back then. As many as 34 England players, including Harry Brook, Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes have registered for the IPL auction.
