Sachin applauds Rohan Bopanna's for no. 1 rank in Australian open tournament

The Indian legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has praised Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna scripted history after becoming the oldest player to win the world’s number one title in men’s doubles tennis on January 24.

Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden defeated Argentinian pair Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the quarterfinals. The 43-year-old Bopanna clinched this title and entered his name in tennis history. It was the first time that Bopanna reached the top position.

The Indian and Australian secured triumph with a score of 6-4, 7-6(5) in a match that lasted one hour and 46 minutes. Bopanna thanked his team and partner Ebden after the victory on January 24 and said it was a special moment in his career.

β€œI want to thank my team who are here, they have been through some tough moments. The career high was in 2013 and you know, you have got to keep going, what can you say? Never hold back, so thanks to all of them. And most of all thanks to my partner Matt, with whom I will get this ranking. So, truly special and you know it will always be a fantastic memory here,” said Bopanna.

“My perseverance, to stay in the sport and to keep fighting and to keep working hard (paid off). It hasn’t sunk in fully. Indian tennis needed this. We don’t have many tennis players coming up. This is going to inspire a lot of people, not just in tennis. People all over the world, being 40 and above, it’s just going to inspire them differently,” he added.

Bopanna and Ebden will face Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen in the last four in Melbourne. Along with this record, he became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion when he and Ebden won the Indian Wells doubles title in March last year. He began playing tennis in 2003 and won a Grand Slam mixed doubles title with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski at the 2017 French Open.

Many celebrities including Sania Mirza, and Mahesh Bhupati have expressed their appreciation to the Bopanna.

“So proud Ro, no one deserves it more,” Sania Mirza wrote on X.

“Age is just a number but β€˜Number 1’ is not just another number. Congratulations Rohan! Being the oldest World Number 1 in Men’s Doubles is a stellar feat,” said Tendulkar on X.

Bopanna and Ebden eye second consecutive final

The duo Bopanna and Ebden will be back on Friday, January 26, when they will take on Zhang Zhizhen and Tomas Machac in the semi-finals. The partners reacted to the final of the US Open last year and are in the hunt for reaching their second one on the trot.

The duo missed out on their first men’s doubles titles last year and will be looking to correct that record in Melbourne.
