Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes 3rd youngest Indian to hit double century in Test cricket

India vs England, Second Test: Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal completed a double century on the second day of the Test match in Vizag. The 22-year-old completed this feat in 277 balls guiding India to more than 350 runs in the first innings of Test cricket.

The youngster was the standout batter in India’s first innings at home. The second-highest score of the pacer after Jaiswal is Shubman Gill with just 34 runs. Gill looked impressive but failed to get on form with the bat at number 3 position.

Jaiswal slammed 18 fours and 7 sixes to achieve a double century and enter his name in history. Previously, Jaiswal’s highest score was 171 during his debut match between India and West Indies.

Thus, Yashasvi Jaiswal became the fourth left-handed batter to hit a Test double century after Vinod Kambli, Sourav Ganguly and Gautam Gambhir.

A double century is exactly what Jiaswal hoped for when he finished Day 1 of the second India and England Test on 179 not out.

“I wanted to play it session by session. When they were bowling well, I just wanted to get through that spell. Initially, the wicket was damp and there was spin and bounce, with a bit of seam. However, I wanted to convert the loose balls and play till the end.

“I would love to double this up and play till the end for the team. I want to recover well for tomorrow now. The pitch played a bit differently, in the morning it was a bit damp and then it settled. With the older ball, there was some bounce,” Jaiswal told broadcasters Sports18 after stumps on Friday.

Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes 3rd youngest Indian to hit double century in Test cricket. Former batter, Vinod Kambli was the youngest Indian to hit a double century at the age of 21 years and 32 days against England in Wankhede in 1993. The second youngster was Sunil Gavaskar at the age of 21 years and 277 days. The youngest double centurion in the history of Test cricket is Javed Miandad at the age of 19 years and 140 days.

At 12, Jaiswal left rural Uttar Pradesh for Mumbai to pursue cricket. He faced challenges, sleeping in tents and selling pani puri for pocket money. His journey took a turn when local coach Jwala Singh observed him at Azad Maidan and became his mentor.

In October 2019, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Jaiswal showcased his talent. In 2020, he played a crucial role in India’s Under-19 World Cup campaign in South Africa, earning the Player of the Tournament title.

This success led to an IPL contract with the Rajasthan Royals, signing for Rs 2.4 crore. In the 2023 IPL, he set a new record for the fastest fifty in the tournament’s history, achieving it in just 13 balls.
